Need a Will?
Most people need a Will. Look around your favourite pub, restaurant or coffee shop: seven out of 10 are sipping from the short cup when it comes to planning for their demise. Why? Procrastination – the well known thief of time! We know we need a Will, but today’s not the day.
There are a lot of excuses, er, reasons we think that we don’t need a Will right now. Here are the top 5.
REASON 1:
I don’t have anything to put in a will, so I don’t need a Will.
Do you have a job? Where do you live? Do you have furniture? A car? Do you have a bank account? How about insurance policies or pension plans at work? That’s your estate. If you have stuff, you really do need a Will.
REASON 2:
My spouse will take care of our kids so I don’t need a Will.
Statistically, you and your spouse aren’t likely to die together, but it’s not that simple. A Will does more than place your kids in the care of the next person in the bloodline. It decides who will care for them and how they will be cared for, as well as what — and when — they inherit from your estate. The person who can provide loving care for your children may not necessarily be the right person to manage hundreds of thousands of pounds. You can sort those responsibilities with your will. If your children have different parents, they will revert to the other parent or Social Services if you die. If there is certainty over who should look after the children, Social Services will take them into care until a Judge decides.
And if you think your spouse will inherit everything – you may well be wrong. If you aren’t married, your partner may inherit NOTHING AT ALL without Court action at vast expense. So you REALLY need a Will!
REASON 3:
My family is complicated so I do need a Will but I don’t really understand the issues.
Everyone’s family is quirky; few family trees have straight dotted lines. All the more reason to have a Will. You will make some decisions that not everyone will agree with, but having a will means they’re your decisions not the Courts. Many families have been torn apart because of sibling anger or heartbreak that resulted from not having a Will. A Will provides the guidance your family needs. But you may need to use our FULL ADVICE SERVICE (call 0800 298 5208) rather than this low cost automatic option.
REASON 4:
My survivors know my wishes so I don’t need a Will.
Even if you’ve told your family what you want, if you die without a Will, the state steps in; a judge decides everything and the state takes a big cut for taxes and court fees. It can take months or years, and the outcome can be frustrating, even heartbreaking. When it’s over, there may not be a wish left to grant. In the meanwhile, Social Services will be looking after your children if your spouse is dead or unable to make decisions.
REASON 5:
It’s expensive, so I can’t afford a Will.
